THE PREFACE TO WAR

Though war was officially declared by Mexico on April 23, 1846, and by the United States on May 13, the conflict had been developing ever since Texas proclaimed its independence in 1836. Eager to annex Texas and expand westward, the American people elected a president who promised expansion, believing that Mexico would sell its northern territories.
