Yahgan Indian, Chile, 1991

On a trip to Antarctica, I visited the Beagle Channel settlement of Puerto Williams, a Chilean naval base. This woman and her sister were said to be the last living full-blood Yahgan Indians. She made toy wooden canoes that were models of the ones her ancestors used when Charles Darwin and the Beagle crew rounded the tip of South American during their incredible voyage of discovery.
