MASKS AND SPIRITUAL TRADITIONS

African-American artists who have visited the Motherland are struck by the African sense that humankind, animals, and all of nature share a kindred relationship. The mask or facial paint which is donned in public dance rituals in many parts of Africa relates the wearer to spiritual traditions much larger and more powerful than the solitary self.
