ANCESTRAL THEMES AND IMAGES

In the 1920s and '30s, Egyptian imagery was frequently cited in discussions of African civilization, and artists presented interpretations of Egyptian culture in their work. The themes of dance and the struggle against slavery were also subjects of great interest. In the Caribbean, African dance patterns survived in strong fashion, while traditional woodcarving techniques were passed on from one generation to another.
