Keeler, 1867 Cartographic History Library University of Texas at Arlington The final stage of exploration in the Southwest was brought about to a large degree by the building of railroads. Companies commissioned maps first as a means of locating the best routes and then as a device for publicizing these routes. This map, which resulted from a railroad survey, still retains some errors, particularly along the course of the Colorado River. It was one of the first, however, to use color for thematic purposes in the depiction of Indian reservations.
