Colton, 1873 Cartographic History Library University of Texas at Arlington This map of Texas graphically illustrates the vast amounts of land ceded to the railroad by the state to encourage it to build lines there. The land was then offered for sale to homesteaders at a state-regulated price. The Texas and Pacific Railway was one of the most successful in the country for a time, and the route connecting Dallas and Fort Worth with the West did much to assure commercial growth.
