INDIAN TERRITORY, 1879
C. Roser
General Land Office, Department of the Interior

As Indian tribes were relocated to Oklahoma during the 19th century, the United States government used maps to amend earlier treaties and agreements which had been based on incorrect and misleading surveys and maps. This official map was drawn to support a Congressional act redistributing land among the Creek, Seminole, and Sac and Fox nations. The present day Panhandle was not part of the territory but was public or "no man's" land.
