MAP OF TEXAS COMPILED FROM SURVEYS John Arrowsmith, 1841 Cartoghraphic History Library University of Texas at Arlington Succeeding maps of the region generally granted a generous portion of the Southwest to the young Republic, a fact used to advantage by the United States in negotiating the treaty to end the Mexican War. The Arrowsmith map of 1841 shows Texas to extend well into New Mexico and north to Colorado. It is notable also for its curious allusion to the abundant forests and water supply in the area of the Texas Panhandle and eastern New Mexico.
