SPANISH MISSIONS IN TEXAS

As a result of French incursions, the Spaniards established a permanent mission, San Francisco de las Tejas, in 1690, in what is now East Texas. Throughout the next century, as missions were opened, closed, relocated, and closed again, or secularized, the missionary activities of the Spaniards left an indelible stamp on the territory. These watercolor renderings of two historic Spanish missions are from a series made by Edward Everett in the 1840s.
