Delisle was a master cartographer who moved the business of producing maps firmly into the scientific world. His 1718 maps of French Louisiana were the first to portray the route of the Mississippi with accuracy, the first to attach a form of the word 'Texas' to the present day area, and the first to document trade between the French and Spanish in what is now New Mexico.
