FLORIDA ET APALCHE Cornelius Wytfliet, 1597 Cartographic History Library University of Texas at Arlington In 1597, when Flemish mapmaker Cornelius Wytfliet published the first atlas devoted entirely to the New World, he included "Florida et Apalche" as one of nineteen maps depicting various regions of North America. Wytfliet's maps were among the first to concentrate on facts rather than legends, on geography rather than political demarcations. The lack of detail on this map shows how little was known about the interior of North America.
