THE GOD ANUBIS UPON HIS GILDED PYLON
Photograph by Harry Burton, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
This jackal-like dog, carved of wood and varnished with black resin, represents the God Anubis whose role was not only to preside over the burial rites but also to act as the vigilant watcher over the dead. It was discovered in the open doorway between the Burial Chamber and the innermost Treasury.
