For centuries the Valley of the Kings had been pillaged by bandits, and archaeologists did not begin excavating there until the nineteenth century. In all, thirty-three royal tombs had been found in the Valley--every one robbed of its treasures by professional thieves--when Howard Carter began his search for Tutankhamun's tomb.
