DISCOVERY OF THE TOMBHoward Carter, a British archaeologist, spent thirty years in Egypt searching for the tomb of Tutankhamun, the "Boy King" who ascended the throne of Egypt about 1334 BC, during the Eighteenth Dynasty. On November 4, 1922, his persistence paid off. "The period to which the tomb belongs is in many respects the most interesting in the whole history of Egyptian art, and we were prepared for beautiful things," wrote Carter. "What we were not prepared for was the astonishing vitality and animation which characterized." |
