Wall Painting from a Lararium

Probably the cult nearest to people's hearts was that of the household gods, or lares. Each householder built a shrine (lararium) for the worship of particular domestic gods (lares and penates) who watched over and protected the family. The lares were often deified spirits of ancestors.
