Art and Human Evolution

Ice Age Art concerns artifacts that were produced by primarily nomadic people who lived from 35,000 to 12,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age. Although the evolution of humankind from early hominid forms to Homo sapiens sapiens covered some four to five million years, the invention of "art" occurred only at the very end of this process. While there is some evidence that the Neanderthals (70,000-37,000 years ago) shaped various ritual objects, art begins to appear in abundance only after modern humans come on the scene.

"If the total span of human existence on earth equals one year, then art originated within the last two weeks."
