This gilt bronze figure of a young woman holding a lamp ranks among the finest of early Chinese sculptures. The girl's young face is sensitively modeled, her pose natural, and her robe draped with decorum. The figure is designed so that smoke from the lamp would rise inside her hollow sleeve to keep the room free from soot.
