Chinese bronze casting is largely an art of surface patterning. By the eighth century BC the bilateral symmetry of earlier designs was renounced in favor of patterns that sweep unbroken around the vessels. In this stately wine container, the surface is dominated by undulating wave patterns that are echoed in openwork in the free-standing crown.
