Food Container

This food container is an extraordinary historical document. Its unique importance lies in its inscription, which records that it was commissioned on the eighth day after the conquest of the Shang dynasty by the Zhou, late in the 11th century BC. The inclusion of this vessel in an exhibition of objects from China is analogous to America's sending the Liberty Bell abroad.
