[Detail, the Animal Mask]

Until about the 10th century BC, the animal mask was the most important element in the decoration of bronzes. This motif represents the head of an animal or imaginary beast, with its body extending to both sides, its tail curling up, and claws and legs parallel to the body. In this example, the animal mask is set in high relief against a background of dense spirals.
