The symposium, or drinking party, was a prominent feature of Macedonian court life, and numerous wine vessels have survived. This type of drinking cup, shaped like an animal's head, was called a rhyton. Wine was poured into the vessel from the top and drunk through holes in the muzzle. Used only at ceremonial events, this elaborate rhyton, measuring 11 inches high, was probably crafted during Philip's lifetime and belonged perhaps to a member of the Macedonian court.
