In contrast, the image of Pan, which is attached to the bronze lantern, seems to stress the animal qualities of the god of woods and fields, who was half-man, half-goat. A frequent companion of the god Dionysos, Pan reputedly helped to found the Macedonian capital of Pella. The bronze lantern, 12 inches high with a clay lamp attached inside, was found in the main chamber of the Royal Tomb. |
