The silver oinochoë, or wine jug, may have been placed in the main chamber of the Royal Tomb in preparation for the symposium in after-life. Standing 8 3/4 inches high, the jug is decorated at the base of the handle with the head of old Silenos, who was identified as both the foster-father and follower of the god Dionysos and the leader of the satyrs. Although animal traits are discernible, especially in the ears, the image emphasizes the human qualities of the creature. |
