The earliest capital of the Macedonian Kingdom was Aigai, located against the northern foothills of Mount Olympos. Although a new capital with better access to the sea was built at Pella by 400 BC, Aigai continued to be a religious site and the burial place of kings. Recent discoveries indicate that the ancient city is at modern Vergina, a village founded in the 1920s. Excavation of the Great Tumulus at Vergina has revealed a royal tomb, perhaps that of Philip II, who was assassinated in 336 BC. |
